Hair Loss Facts Pasadena, CA

The majority of adults will experience some level of hair loss in their lifetime. How much and at what age can vary, depending on their genetics, gender, lifestyle and health. From male pattern baldness to hair loss as a result from injuries or disease, there are many possible causes for losing hair at any age. At Pasadena Hair Transplant, we want to help our patients understand the causes and possible solutions for hair loss. Here are some hair loss facts to help you get started on researching hair restoration options.

General Hair Facts

The average healthy human has 100,000 hairs on their head – those with darker hair tend to have fewer, but thicker strands, while those with lighter hair have higher quantities of thinner strands. Hair grows faster than any other tissue in the body – on average, people grow 35 meters of hair a day! Every person was born with all the hair follicles they will ever have – once lost, hair follicles will not grow back.

Typical Hair Loss

Everyone loses hair – most people lose 50-100 strands a day on average. It is normal for hair to go through phases of growth, rest and eventually, falling out. However, when there are changes in nutrition, hormone balance and other factors in the body, hair loss can increase, and hair growth can stall.

Hair Loss in Men

Men are at much higher risk for significant hair loss. Male pattern baldness accounts for 95% of men with hair loss. Some of the statistics for male hair loss include:

  • 20% of men have visible hair loss by age 20
  • 25% of men have visible hair loss by age 30
  • 50% of men have visible balding by age 50
  • 66% of men have visible balding by age 60

While both men and women can experience hair loss, men are at much higher risk for balding. Hair loss can also impact their facial hair, including their beard and mustache.

Hair Loss in Women

Women are also at risk for female pattern hair loss, which is similar to but different than male pattern baldness. However, women are at higher risk for traction alopecia, which is hair loss caused by pulling and stress on the hair from demanding hair styles and procedures. Statistics for female hair loss include:

  • 3-12% of women 30-40 years of age have visible hair loss
  • 25% of women have visible female pattern hair loss by age 49
  • 41% of women have visible female pattern hair loss by age 69

It is important to understand that the majority of adults, men and women, will experience hair thinning at some point in their lives. It is nothing to be ashamed of, but it is also not something you need to accept.
